Excursions

Loch Linnhe Boat Trip

This powerful speed boat (R.I.B.) takes you out in to the middle of Loch Linnhe and around Lismore Island and combines admiring the amazing scenery and superb views, wildlife watching and a little exhilaration thanks to it's two extremely powerful engines. It will take anything from one to twelve people and picks up and drops off from Port Appin. This trip is extremely flexible as the driver will adapt the journey to take in any specific requests where possible and will judge the pace according to the your wishes.

Boat charter

Charter a sea going motor boat for a day and enjoy the freedom of the sea. Whether your preference is fishing, sight seeing or simply soaking up the fresh air, we can arrange it.

Yacht charter

Charter a yacht for a couple of hours or make a day of it - with or without a skipper. The boat will take up to six people and is moored 20 minutes drive from the hotel (if you take the skipper option, he will bring it to Port Appin if required).

Seaplane

Seeing Scotland from the air is a truly awe inspiring experience in itself but this also brings much of Scotland within reach in a day.

We can offer a specific tour round the west coast or would be delighted to arrange a specific journey if, for example, you wanted to have lunch in Edinburgh or perhaps the isle of Skye. The possibilities are endless.

Bespoke driving tours

If you are limited on time, the best way of making the most of your trip is to arrange an escorted tour. Our driver will adapt a day tour in his luxury 4x4 to ensure you see as much as possible and will happily include any specific locations you wish to visit. He is very knowledgable aboutthe area and his friendly and personable manner ensure a very enjoyable time. We guarantee you will come away feeling far more knowledgeable about this part of Scotland.

Loch Etive cruise

Loch Etive is a beautiful loch and with no road access along most of it's length, it is truly unspoiled by human contact. The cruise operates daily (except Saturday) from Taynuilt (35 minutes drive from the hotel) and provides commentary on the scenery and wildlife. Snacks are available on board as are toilet facilities. Cruises last either 90 minutes or three hours.

Activities

Walking

Walking is perhaps the major pastime in the area. We have several beautiful walks right outside the hotel and manymore within a short drive.

We certainly recommend the Clach Thoull walk which is a very pleasant 40 minute circular walk starting and finishing at the hotel. Cleared by the Scottish Rights of Way Society, this loch side, flat walk takes you past a cliff face with a hole (Clach Thoull) and back to the hotel via the pier at Port Appin, from where a small ferry goes to the island of Lismore.

We cannot mention walking without referring to Glencoe. Here there are too many trails to talk about in detail ( except we would advise trying the 'Lost Valley' trail if you do not mind a steep gradient) and we would recommend you drop in to the visitor centre for guidance and which is conveniently positioned at the north west entrance to the glen.

We will be delighted to talk to you more about the local walks and all the bedrooms feature details in their room folder.

Bicycle hire

This is highly recommended as it enables you to appreciate a wider range of scenery than if you were walking. Lismore Island is a particularly popular trip with just one very peaceful single track road through it's centre giving access to three ruined castles and some stunning views. We can book the bikes for you which are located a five minute walk from the hotel.

Mountain biking

The Nevis range (part of the Ben Nevis massif) just north of Fort William (45 minutes drive) offers 60km of off road trails and is suited to all levels of ability right up to the most experienced who may wish to try the trail built for The World Cup. Bikes of different grades and associated equipment are available to hire.

Fishing

Most types of fishing can be arranged and this can be with or without a gillie. Teaching can also be arranged. Let us know what you are after and we will be happy to arrange it.

Climbing

Apart from the obvious possibilities for outdoor climbing inthe area, a 45 minute drive from the hotel brings you to an indoor climbing centre of impressive proportions. This is the largest indoor climbing facility in the U.K. and includes the largest indoor ice climb in Europe. Instruction is available for both children and adults and covering all levels of ability including complete beginners. The cente also has a cafe and shower facilities.

Scuba diving

With some excellent diving opportunities in the surrounding waters, we can arrange familiarisation sessions for beginners right through to PADI recognised courses and full blown diving trips. The centre is 45 minutes drive from the hotel.

Canoeing

An alternative way to explore the loch, you can pick it up from the Port Appin pier.

Water sports centre

Hire a motor boat for as long as you want and go out to see the seals basking on the rocks in the middle of the loch. For the more active you can hire a small sailing boat or surf board (10 minutes drive from the hotel).

Horse Riding

Located a 10 minute drive from the hotel, the stables can cater for first timers wanting a walk along the beach or experienced riders wanting a two hour canter in the surrounding countryside.

Golf

Glencruitten golf course is our nearest 18 hole course and is 35 minutes drive south of the hotel. It is 4452 yds and is par 61. We also have Fort William golf course 45 minutes north of the hotel and this is 6217 yds and par 71.

Rally Karting

Located 20 minutes drive from the hotel, this fun activity combines the two activities of rallying and karting. Children over 7 can also participate as junior karts are available.

Go Karting

Fort William has a large, outdoor, professionally run karting track. Adults and children accompanied by an adult can participate and karts on the track at any one time are limited to six to maximise enjoyment. It is open all year and is even more enjoyable in the rain (50 minutes drive from the hotel).
